Summer Job: bar staff in Greece
Do you fancy spending the summer on a working holiday in Greece?
The Galini Hotel in Pefki on Evvia Island is looking for temporary staff.
They need waitresses/barmaids for their café bar in Greece, March–September 2008.
Here’s what they say:
Location
Pefki is a lovely holiday resort situated on the northern tip of the second biggest Greek island, Evvia. Evvia lies quite close to the mainland and Pefki is situated about 2.5 hours drive from Athens, or 4 hours drive from Thessaloniki.
Pefki is mostly visited by Greek tourists, but there are also many tourists from all over the world. The main tourist season is two months long, starting from the beginning of July and ending at the beginning of September.
Pefki is relatively close to all the main archeological sites and other places of interest, so if you are interested, you can visit them, especially during the not so busy period.
The Business
Our business is family-run, consisting of me and my husband and his sister and brother with families. It includes one hotel (Galini), which is situated in the center of Pefki, right on the beach. Part of this hotel is Fygias bar (where you would be working), a restaurant and our travel agency, Traditional Tours. Also, we own another, high-class hotel just outside Pefki, Ilios Studios.
Our bar is one of the biggest and most crowded in the area and it has very good reputation. It is open from early in the morning until late night. It has all sorts of clients, from young people to families with children and elder ones.Concerning our employees, most of them are girls of the age of 20–26 years, from many different countries (so basic communication language is English), including Greece.
Job Description
The job we offer is either that of waitress, or the one of barwoman. We will decide for which one you are more suitable after we see you at work. Basically, both jobs include preparing of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and coffees, serving them (in case of waitress, to the tables, in case of barwoman, at the bar) and making bills. Keeping clean your working space is also part of the job.
There is always possibility to swap for another position (in the hotel, restaurant etc.) if you would prefer it and/or if we will find you suitable.
We need staff from the middle of March until the end of September approximately. Of course not all our employees will be working with us all these months and you can decide which period of time you are interested to come.
The working hours are flexible (there is not a fixed closing time in Greece) but usually you will work about 9 hours. You can work either day hours, or evening hours. Again, this we will arrange after your arrival and the decision is mutual – you can inform us what you prefer, but the final decision is taken by us.
There is no uniform for this job and you wear your own clothes. You are welcome to wear anything that you feel good in, however your clothes must be clean and your appearance tidy and, especially in the evening, suitable for the place. Sportswear is not acceptable for the evening.
Pay and benefits
The basic wage is €30.00 per day (shift) plus your tips.
We provide you with accommodation and you are not paying any fee for it.
We don’t provide you with boarding (food), but the girls usually cook together, or we can arrange you boarding if you will be interested.
We don’t cover your travel expenses.
Usually, there is one day a week off, but this can change according to an amount of work.
Requirements for the position
Good knowledge of English language
Greek language is not necessary, but is welcomed. If we accept you for the position, you will be asked to learn few basic words, which you will need for the job (I’ll send you the list – it isn’t more than one page) and also, you will catch some Greek during your stay here.
Flexibility and again flexibility. Greece is a country where there is no strict schedule and many times things change, so it is necessary to be flexible.
Cooperative and sociable nature (you will be working in a collective, where cooperation is important and you will be working with people)
Ability to learn fast
Also previous working experiences are welcomed
What’s needed to apply
Your CV (resume)
Motivation letter with few words about you but necessary including:
- your age
- your nationality (if you are holder of EU passport)
- language knowledge
- months, which you are interested to come

All these information must be in English and sent the soonest possible. If some of the required information is missing, we consider your application incomplete and as such we can not assess it.
The application process
At the moment we are collecting all the applications. First accepted employees will be informed by the end of February/beginning of March. Afterwards, you can get notification from us until the end of May.
Patience is necessary, since there are hundreds of applications.
Also, we don’t inform applicants in case that we turn down their application. You may contact us if you would like to know about the state of your application, but please, don’t do it before beginning of May and in case that we are very busy, your request may not be replied.
At the moment we don’t need any male staff and in case that you are applying together with your friends, we cannot assure you that we will accept you together.
