Internships - Athens News
The Athens News offers three internship positions each summer, running from 15 July to 15 September.
Responsibilities:
All three internships are in newsroom production duties, with an opportunity for limited newsgathering and writing. They focus on arts, business/economy and general news respectively.
The production duties include wire and photo archive searches, building pages from in-house and agency material, title and subtitle writing, captioning and proofreading. Interns receive training in all aspects of production. They receive instructions for each page from the news editor and liaise with the copy-editor (sub-editor), proofreader and page-setter.
If interns have time, they are invited to research and write brief articles in the arts, city, feature and human interest beats. They receive comments and editing by newspaper staff. Interns are also invited to attend the weekly editorial meetings and see how story assignment decisions are made. Their work is appraised throughout the internship.
Working hours are 10am - 7pm Monday to Friday.
Interns are required to be present in the newsroom a week before their internship begins to receive startup training.
Payment:
The internships pay a fee of €1,000 each before tax, to cover public transport and lunch expenses.
(Tax rates run between 20 and 24 percent depending on how tax is declared).
References:
The editor will provide a written reference upon request and be available for a telephone reference.
Application Requirements:
Applicants must have a native grasp of English and demonstrate interest and ability in writing and editing. High school graduation or enrolment is obligatory.
University graduation or enrolment, experience in a publication and knowledge of Greek are favoured. We expect interns to be punctual, professional and co-operative.
Application Instructions:
Applicants should send a covering letter, resume and three writing samples to:
